Introduction to Star Drive Screws

If you have ever tried to put in a screw with a hand screwdriver, or even with a power driver, you probably know that phillips and flat-head screws have a tendency to strip out. This has always been unacceptable to me.

One day, while researching the best screws to use for wood, I came across a type of screw that I hadn’t heard of before. It was called a Star Drive Screw, also known as a T-Star Screw, or Torx Screw. Star Drive Screws were advertised as having solved the problems that phillips and flat-head screws have had. They were supposed to go in extremely easily and without stripping out.

I was intrigued, so I bought a few Star Drive Screws to try them out. The package came with the appropriate bit. When I went home and tried the screws out on a project, I was simply shocked at how well they performed. I had never had to use so little effort to put in a screw. They went right in. No stripping. They reduce the need to pre-drill and they even had self-countersinking abilities. They have at least double the torque of phillips or square head screws cialis overnight. Anyway, I was sold on them and I haven’t looked back ever since.

Potential Complications

The only downside I have had to using Star Drive Screws in all of my wood projects is that phillips and square screws are so ubiquitous, or in other words, they are found everywhere. I addressed that problem by simply committing to use these screws all the time. The more I use them, the less I need phillips or square. Problem solved.

Just remember that you’ll need a specialized bit. Many Star Drive Screws come in packages that have the bit included, but remember to double check to make sure. Your standard phillips and flat-heat bits will not work.  Star Drive Screws Bits also come in different sizes to match the difference size screw head that will be used.  Be aware of that.

Who Will Benefit Most by Using Star Drive Screws?

  • Gutter installers

Final Word

It would be smart to consider switching to Star Drive Screws. They make “To Build My Own” a lot easier on you. They just plain work. They are excellent for projects where you think you’ll have to take the screws out and put them back in over and over again as they don’t tend to strip out. They are extremely easy to install.  No fighting with the drill to get the screw to go in.  I give them my highest praise as a do-it-yourselfer.
